No seriously, what IS it all about?
You get up each day. You face challenges that seem big. You complain. You feel tired. You read about other people’s accomplishments. You realize you’re middle aged. You realize your children are leading their own lives? You probably won’t write a book. You wish you were thinner, or taller, or up on current events. Tomorrow you will make some changes.
What IS it all about?
Maybe it’s about calling up your friends and doing stuff on your list. Having fun. Making others happy.
We met for our fourth meeting at Janey’s house. Jane is Patty’s sister. They live mere blocks apart and see each other probably several times a day. They work at their family business, and their offices are close. As we arrived at Jane’s house the kitchen filled with treats: smoked salmon canapes, fruit platters, cheese… and Jane was quick to pour us wine!
And Jane was wrapping up a Skype call with her older daughter, Anna, who is in Paris pursuing her dream of dance and theatre…go Anna!
Trudi gave us luggage tags for our journey! Obviously we are the CUTEST to ever travel the 66 Trail!
And Grandma Betty (Jane and Patty’s mom) gave us official Route 66 game cards so a discussion of our planned game nights ensued: Hearts, Spades, WAR, not Bridge.
Leading us with her usual enthusiasm, Patty V, donned readers and began reading to us from the BIBLE, our Route 66 Bible. Filled with fun facts and info it will serve us well as we make our plans. “Did you know that Oprah Winfrey tackled the Route in 2006?” ” There is a River Valley Motor Lodge that brags about “free coffee AND tv!” Best of all was Patty’s story of her pursuit of our lodging in Chelsea, Oklahoma which sounds like it will be A-OK! Patty left a message at the Chelsea Motor Inn for “Trudy” who has a pleasant voicemail voice. And shortly thereafter Trudy returned the call, slightly out of breath, but enthusiastically. (She’d been out mowing, don’t you know.) Trudy is thrilled to learn that she is on OUR bucket list! Actually thrilled! Absolutely will NOT accept a credit card to reserve the room, don’t be silly. Can’t wait to meet us!
Back to our Bible…Patty shared plenty of info about restaurants where “every bite is a tender delight!” and fascinating sightseeing opportunities…the Milk Bottle Grocery, Cozy Dog Drive Inn (don’t ask for a CORN dog, okay?),
We now have a Coffee and Tea Committee: Patti T is vice chair. Julie R (obviously) is the Chair. And Jean is another early riser who will dedicate herself to our central mission…we must locate and return with coffee/tea each morning for the rest of the gang. Another note about Jean: she is returning early from a 26th annual family reunion in order to make this trip with us ❤
Trudi tasked us with investigating Points of Interest along the way. That is our homework. And we talked about important issues like rotating where we sit in the van. And rotating roommates. And Jane and Patty and Trudi shared a hilarious story about a cruise that they went on a few years ago…Trudi is the only single gal on the trip. And she was single on that cruise. The SOCK RULE was in effect. If you are “entertaining” you must put a sock on the doorknob to warn your roommates. Trudi, of course, grabbed a good book and a pillow, placed a sock on the doorknob and then giggled to herself as the roomies came back to the cabin and realized that the room was not available! For our trip the sock rule is in effect. And pretty darn unlikely to be used.
Our next meeting is at Jean’s house. We will watch the movie “Michael” with John Travolta per Patty’s request. And the gavel dropped.

What’s it all about, Alfie
Is it just for the moment we live
What’s it all about when you sort it out, Alfie
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind
And if only fools are kind, Alfie
Then I guess it’s wise to be cruel
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie
What will you lend on an old golden rule
As sure as I believe there’s a heaven above, Alfie
I know there’s something much more
Something even non-believers can believe in
I believe in love, Alfie
Without true love we just exist, Alfie
Until you find the love you’ve missed you’re nothing, Alfie
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And you’ll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie
